We strive to be a culinary sandbox where every kind of geek can explore food, experiment with new ideas, find inspiration, and share in the fun. Whether someone geeks out over food, culture, fantasy, science, technology, or something entirely different, we believe there should always be a place for them at the table—and that what we create should be both delicious and enjoyable.
Founder's Statement
As the founder of The Geek Menu, I have spent much of my professional life in the technology industry. Over the years, I have worked across several areas of IT, including telecommunications, sales, onsite support, consulting, and general IT operations. I have been an engineer, a security consultant, and both a student and a teacher, working with everything from servers and networks to virtualization, automation, and physical hardware. For the past thirty years, I have been more of a technology geek than a people geek—but that describes only one part of my geekiness.
Growing up, the most techy thing in our home was a television connected to an Atari 2600. Computers came later, but ours was a resource used primarily for business. Personal cell phones did not become common until about twenty years later, and during those earlier years, car phones were not available to everyone. The Internet was still something for colleges rather than an everyday source of information. When dial-up Internet became available, you were discouraged from using it during the daytime.
I “participated” in some sports—although not especially well. I also went bicycling, camping, and fishing, learned to play several musical instruments, and spent plenty of time playing fantasy role-playing games. I also read at least one book a week, if not more. We went to the library, checked out books, and had to return them on time, too! Life may have seemed simpler then than it does today, but one thing my siblings and I learned early was how to cook and bake. Even with that early experience, I bought my own home at least a decade later and still did not begin thinking about food as more than simply something to eat for nearly fifteen additional years.
But my interest in cooking grew when I finally had a place where I could set up a smoker. I had a BBQ itch, and from there, my interest evolved. I explored different cuisines, cultures, techniques, and styles of cooking. Some connected with my technology interests, while others brought me back to the games, stories, outdoor activities, music, and experiences that had shaped me earlier in life.
I realized there is no single type of geek—and no single way for a geek to enjoy food. Athletes, techies, fantasy fans, outdoor enthusiasts, vegetarians, gamers, readers, musicians, and people of different generations may all bring their own interests, preferences, and experiences to the kitchen.
That is where the inspiration for The Geek Menu comes from. It is not meant to focus on one hobby, one cuisine, or one narrow corner of the food world. It is a place where food can connect with all the wonderfully nerdy kingdoms of geekdom.
My hope is that The Geek Menu offers ideas people can use, inspiration they can build upon, and a welcoming place to explore food without taking everything too seriously. Whether someone has been cooking for decades or is only beginning to find their way around the kitchen, there should always be room to experiment, learn something new, make something delicious, and have a little fun along the way.
